Everyone is welcome at this popular plant sale, featuring many native, xeric and heirloom plants that are hard to find anywhere else!

Come shop from the hundreds of varieties of perennials, annuals and drought-hardy plants. We’ll also have many varieties of organic heirloom vegetables.

Friday and Saturday 9:00 to 5:00
and Sunday 10:00 to 2:00 (note the shortened Sunday hours this year)

These lists represent plants we’ve ordered to have available at the sale. Unfortunately, sometimes we don’t get everything we want (for a variety of reasons – propagation failure, etc). But most of these plants will be available – come early for best selection! :

Allen will focus on tough and interesting perennials, most of which you will find at the upcoming HAS Plant Sale. Britton’s is a CNGA nursery as well asa Plant Select propagation nursery, and Allen has worked with them for nearly eight years. They’ve been a supplier for our plant sale for many years. So come prepared to make your plant sale shopping list!

Many of you remember Larry Vickerman from a few years ago when he was the County Director and Horticulture Agent for El Paso County. Since then he’s done an terrific job overseeing the Chatfield nature preserve of Denver Botanic Gardens. So he knows a thing or two about native plants and bio-diversity. We are pleased to bring him back to town with the question, “What is bio-diversity and why should we worry about it?”

Tour Before the Talk
If you’d like to learn more about the plants and landscape design at the Penrose House grounds, be sure to come at 9:00 a.m. for a walking tour with Leslie Thomas of Thomas and Thomas Planning, Urban Design, & Landscape Architecture.

“Some you know, and some I’ll bet you don’t!” That’s what Pam is teasing us with for this informative presentation on shrubs for our area. She also promises that most of them are low-water-using while others are even no-water-using! And, best of all, most have been ordered for the big plant sale.

With small changes in your garden, you can bring more butterflies into your yard. Did you know that March is the time when many species start their migration from Mexico? Many of you have enjoyed Annamarie’s talks over the years. She is very well versed on many subjects, including butterflies! She has volunteered for many years at the Butterfly Pavilion in Broomfield and is an expert. So come learn a bit about butterflies’ life cycle in addition to what plants will attract them to your garden.

Have fun and save money growing colorful perennials from seed. Perennials
are an easy way to add color, form and texture to the landscape. Many of the colorful perennials that are so successful in our gardens are quite easy to start from seed. “Easy Perennials” will focus on high impact perennials that don’t require high input (water, fertilizer, pesticides and time) and simple seed starting techniques that will help you start or add to your own colorful garden. Cathie has been a Colorado Master Gardener and has spent several years working at the Colorado Springs Utilities Xeriscape Demonstration Garden.

In what has become a tradition, Larry Stebbins, the pied piper of vegetables in Colorado Springs, will present our January library lecture. Come hear how Queen Elizabeth I almost poisoned her guests by serving the wrong part of a vegetable. Learn what color carrots were three hundred years ago. Do you know what vegetable was found in Montezuma’s garden in 1519 by the invading Spaniards? All of this and more will be included in this light-hearted but informative presentation. It will be a guaranteed good time for fun and old alike.

For this special program, start cutting interesting seedheads and flowers and drying them. Bring them and a six-inch pot to this session, and you’ll take home an arrangement as well as help us create one-of-a-kind centerpieces for our annual dinner tables. **Please spray your dried flowers and seedheads with hair spray (cheapest is best).**

Silent Auction
Come prepared to bid at our third annual silent auction. This year, proceeds will be used towards the Elsie Pope Memorial being created and installed at the HAS Demonstration Garden.

The program for this year will be presented by Lisa Bird, Colorado Native Plant Master. Her talk is titled “Colorado’s Native Gems.”

As gardeners, we are all aware of and interested in the exciting weather of our area (how about that 4.5″ rain on Sep 14?). Randy Gray will talk to us about weather issues in the southeast Colorado region. He is the Southeast Colorado CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network) Regional Coordinator and is based in the Pueblo National Weather Service office.
